In April 1989, this 12-blade counter-rotating assembly combined with a PW-Allison 578-DX engine was successfully flown using a modified McDonnell Douglas MD-80 test bed. The flight lasted 100 minutes; the aircraft reached an altitude of 4550 metres and a top speed of 440 km/h.
