Project Introduction by ICAO Secretary General and UN-Habitat Execuitve Director | ICAO UN Habitat Sustainable Airport Project |
Project Rationale | |
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) works towards socially, economically and environmentally sustainable human settlements; at the urban and rural level. International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), on the other hand, works with member states to promote, support and achieve safe, efficient, secure, economically sustainable and environmentally responsible civil aviation operations and regulations through requisite policies and regulations.
The purpose of this project is to visually examine, identify and promote synergistic relations between airport development and urban development. We aim to identify global good practices and principles in urban and regional planning and management around air transport infrastructure that can be applied to help sustainably develop air transport infrastructure and services. We will do so by assessing and documenting the trends and impacts of airports and air traffic on land use around the airport and along the airport-city corridor by tracking land use changes and conforming to urban planning regulations, and their related socio-economic and ecological impacts to sustainable urban development.
UN-Habitat and ICAO together with diverse partnerships with stakeholders will develop conceptual, methodological and operational spatial and visualization frameworks that will highlight the role of airport systems (infrastructure and services) to urban development beyond the city, along the airport-city axis and the airport-rural area trajectory; and study the synergistic relations to sustainable development. |

Facts and Figures |
In 2014, the total economic impact of aviation reached 3.5% of the world’s GDP ($2.4 trillion). Airfreight constitutes 34.6% of world trade by value despite this being only 0.5% by volume. The sector supported the global employment of 58.1 million people. Over 1.1 billion tourists crossed international borders, over ½ of who traveled by air to their destinations. Only 2.6% of global funding for infrastructure and services (in 2005-2015) supported aviation development. |
