Women in Aviation Multimedia Engagement Contest

Resume

Aviation is a forward-looking industry that connects people and business and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In 2016, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) organized a photo contest on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women in Aviation in collaboration with the International Aviation Women’s Association, which resulted in 91 submissions from all around the world.

The ICAO Global Aviation Gender Summit 2023, hosted by the Government of Spain and, on its behalf, by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, planned to be held from 5 to 7 July 2023 in Madrid, Spain, provides an opportune moment to hold a second contest inspired by this first successful experience. The intent of this multimedia engagement contest is to put women in aviation in the spotlight, provide an opportunity for aviation personnel as well as the public at large to engage on the theme of the contest, and create visibility for the Summit. Contestants will be invited to submit social media style multimedia items - such as photos, memes, clips, personal narratives – that relate their experiences and perspectives on gender issues and progress toward equality in aviation.

To this end, ICAO is inviting interested participants to submit their graphic or video files by Monday, 15 May 2023 by email to GenderEvent [at] icao.int (GenderEvent[at]icao[dot]int). In return, ICAO will seek sponsorship to facilitate the following prizes:

  • The selected winner will receive an invitation and financial support (flight and accommodation for two nights) to attend the Global Aviation Gender Summit scheduled to take place from 5 to 7 July 2023, as well as a Certificate of Acknowledgement;

  • 2 X CAD$500 honourable mention awards will be presented to two additional contestants, as well as Certificates of Acknowledgement; the honorable mention awards will be announced during the Summit as well, with the individuals participating virtually;

  • Contestants entered may appear in ICAO’s media feeds or in its global campaigns and publications.

Entry Ideas:

Using their multimedia submissions, participants are invited to illustrate one of the following gender-related topics:

- Women and innovation in aviation

- Women and sustainability of aviation

- Women in decision-making and policy-setting roles in aviation

- Diversity and inclusion in the workplace

- Women leading technical roles and overcoming stereotypes

- Towards the next generation of women in aviation

- COVID-19 and women in aviation

- Women, aviation and humanitarian assistance

- Aviation training and STEM education for women and young girls

This is by no means intended as exhaustive, and prospective contestants are highly encouraged to pursue any associated topics suitable to realizing their best possible submission.

Selection Criteria:

Twelve qualifying entries will be uploaded to a public platform for voting, the results of which will determine the winners.

The ICAO Secretariat will determine whether an entry qualifies on the basis of its:

  • Technical aptitude of the entry (e.g., in the case of a photo, that is sharp and clear)
  • Originality, representation of the selected gender statement and creativity
  • Visual storytelling and aesthetic appeal of the submission

In the event that more than twelve entries qualify, the first twelve entries by chronological submission will be presented for the public vote.

Announcement of the Winner:

The contest winner and runners-up will be notified on or before 10 June 2023. Official announcement of the winners will take place during the Global Aviation Gender Summit from 5 to 7 July 2023, in Madrid, Spain.

Contest Guidelines:

  2. Files must be submitted in .png, .jpg, .mov or .mp4 format. Videos may not exceed 45 seconds in length.
  3. Each individual participant may provide up to three submissions, however only the best one as identified by ICAO will qualify for voting.
  4. Entries must be sent to GenderEvent [at] icao.int (GenderEvent[at]icao[dot]int) by midnight on or before Monday, 15 May 2023 (EDT). Late entries will not be accepted for judging but may be considered for future PR initiatives.
